The beautiful island nation of the Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean about 700 kilometers (430 miles) south-west of  Sri Lanka and 400 kilometers (250 miles) south-west of India. Officially known as the Republic of Maldives, it is a double chain of 26 gorgeous coral atolls running through the Indian Ocean.
